A.J. retired from the Air Force as a Lt Col after 20 years of service. He taught gas turbine engine design at USAFA, and has multiple patents. He received a bronze star for deployed service in Afghanistan. He graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from West Point '95, an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology focused on Pulse Detonation Engines in 2002, and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech developing sensors for Scramjet engines in 2007.
